Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music described as tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines and reverberant drum patterns, clipped samples, and occasional vocals.

Dubstep's early roots are in the more experimental releases of UK garage producers, seeking to incorporate elements of drum and bass into the South London-based 2-step garage sound. The genre's feel is commonly dark; tracks frequently use a minor key and can feature dissonant harmonies such as the tritone interval within a riff. Other… read more

Simply, a genre of Electronic Dance Music based around a non-straightened half-step beat, wherein a bass-drum (kick) will often (but not always) play on the first downbeat and a mid-range percussion (snares, claps, etc.) playing on the third downbeat, with variations to this skeleton beat. It is often produced around 140BPM, but can go as low as 128 or even as high as 145, there is no real set BPM.
Sometimes it is said to be a downtempo genre but this is simply a misunderstanding of the concept of a half-step beat.
LFO modulated low and midrange basslines are not essential to the genre and alot of dubstep productions do not even incorporate them (e.g. Nero - Reaching Out, Bassnectar Remix - Ellie Goulding - Lights), and actually originated from it's origins in 2-step garage and Dub Reggae, and can be found in DnB and House.
Expanding on this, frequently, alot of songs that aren't Dubstep are referred to as Dubstep, mainly due to incorporating alot of features (LFO-Modded Bass, Dirty FM Synthesis Mid-Range, etc.) associated with Dubstep.
There is no specific feel to dubstep. It can be thrashy, heavy and dirty (e.g. Skrillex, Excision, etc.) or melodic, euphoric and trancey (e.g. Seven Lions, Xilent, etc.), or moody, relaxing and chill (e.g. Skream, Bassnectar, etc.). It can incorporate elements of a variety of different genres ranging from Trance and DnB to Hip-Hop and Nu-Metal, and the reverse is also true.

Person who understands what Dubstep is: It has a half-step beat, and is roughly around the tempo of 140, it's dubstep, even if you don't like it, which i definitely don't, but i won't lie that it doesn't fall into the genre.

Dubstep - Dubstep is music centred around bass.
It draws on many musical influences. Such influences include, dub, reggae, d'n'b, jungle, UK garage, grime, techno and IDM.
Usually around 140bpm in tempo, the unifying sounds within dubstep are always bass and sub-bass.
The music ranges in style from melodious instrumentals to dark, techy and distorted numbers.
Many UK grime mc's also mc over dubstep tracks, although grime and dubstep should not be confused.
Dubstep is usually mellow and generally has a well paced structure to each song. Grime beats are generally more disjointed, the overall production level being grittier than that in dubstep.
Several dubstep producers, labels and radios etc - D.D.S, Nex Level Records, Hench, SubFM etc

Dubstepmusic
A genre of electronic music originating in the UK. It is characterized by deep bass and sub-basslines. Dubstep probably has one of the most ridiculous fanbases out there. The fanbase mostly consists of people ranging from 14-18 years of age. Most of these 'fans' are preppy kids who listen to dubstep not because they like how it sounds, but because they think it's 'cool', and that's what all the 'cool' kids listen to. Those kids make up about 85% of the fanbase. The other 25% are actual dubstep fans, who appreciate the rythm and basslines and aren't just looking for filthy drops. Dubstep isn't about mind fucking noises, it's about the rythm and the feel of bass sounds. Unfortunately, 85% of the fanbase do not have the intelligence to grasp this truth, and continue to search for and listen to what they think are 'filthy dubstep tracks'. Dubstep fans also feel the need to let everyone know about their affection for the genre. Wearing dubstep clothing and accessories, having dubstep phone backgrounds, it's so stupid. If i was into rap music, i wouldn't go around wearing shirts and hats that say 'rap'. My phone background wouldn't be the word 'rap'. This just proves that people like dubstep just because they think it's cool. This is what it is. Dubstep is a genre of music, not a religion. I love dubstep, but it's like some sort of ego-inflating disease. I honestly can't wait for it to die so only the true dubstep fans are left.

Dubstepmusic
A style of electronic music that is based around drops and wobble-bass. Unfortunately, since this is the case, it all sounds pretty much exactly the same. It's all about break downs, and since that is typically only one part of the song, the rest of dubstep music that isn't wobble-bass and drops sounds like your typical synth beats from pop music, often featuring a female vocalist fed through auto-tune. A lot of people can't listen to dubstep for longer than two minutes at a time because their longer attention span prevents such a collage of wrecking beats and soft synths from mixing in such rapid succession.
