My first idea was to replace the boot sector on the USB drive with a Windows XP boot sector, which would try to load NTLDR instead of BOOTMGR. However, this failed to take into account that with either boot sectors (older XP version or updated Vista and newer version) the Windows XP Installation medium is not designed to be started from USB. While UNetbootin is primarily intended for Linux distributions the websites indeed also mentions some unspecific Windows ISO, but I am sure it is limited to Windows Vista and newer, which have native support to be installed from USB mass storage. Unfortunately you cannot install Windows XP or any other Windows Operating system in External Hard disk drive. Please provide us more information regarding the issue so that we can assist you further.

Meanwhile, I would suggest you to boot into BIOS and check if internal hard disk get detected. If so then try changing the boot priority to Hard disk and check if you can boot. For more information on BIOS settings check the computer manual or contact the computer manufacturer.

I've used WinToFlash to successfully install Windows XP RTM on an Asus EEE PC 900HD.

Wanted to install a nLite'd version with SP3 slipstreamed but got BSODs on install. RTM ('SP0') worked OK though.
